My Work Is Your Spam

For the last 24 hours I have watched as an old school New York publicist has been outed by a market leading US tech blog.

The thing that I find interesting in this exchange (where the tech crunch blog ask to be removed from publicist’s distribution list and she flames back aggressively saying she is just doing her job & just hit delete if you’re not interested) is that it is a perfect example of how our new communication tools do not play by old school rules.

Lois is clearly from a time before colour and believes that the receiver of any communication has no ability to control what they get. They should just bin anything they get which they don’t want. She has decades of experience pumping out press releases to anyone she had a contact for and now does the same by email.

Of course the rules have changed and it is about permission. It is also about treating others how you’d like to be treated and finally it is about the ability to be exposed widely and quickly should you not play by the new rules.

The post note is that Lois today has taken a much more conciliatory tone and hopefully has taken this as a learning experience from which she may join us in the brave new 2.0 communication world.
