New Music Friday #6: Gin Wigmore
Because we all need new music for a weekend…
From: Auckland, NZ
Who: Gin Wigmore (vocals) with The Cardinals (Ryan Adams’s band)
The Scoop: It’s not often that I think someone is remarkable on a first listen but Gin Wigmore is different. And she is one of ours - although I’m sure for how long.
At 23 she has now has a world of options in front of her. She can write - at 17 she won the Grand Prize at the International Songwriting Competition becoming the youngest ever winner with the song ‘Hallelujah’ (refreshing when that title isn’t in relation to the Jeff Buckley song). She has great, unique pipes - in that becoming more common Dusty springfield kinda way. And she is cute (with a funky array of body art) & funny - she copes so well with The Edge Morning Madhouse when Dom is bodypainted as a bottle of Bombay.
Gin also has a NZ Chart record - achieved with Smashproof earlier this year. Together on the hit ‘Brother’ they are the local artists with the longest stay at #1 on the NZ sales charts ever.
Under My Skin is the perfect starting point for getting to know Gin and a lot of people will know it already from the bodypaint Air NZ ads. Hallelujah has all the hallmarks of being a great live song & the first single Oh My is one for the ladies (oh my god, i’ve been beaten in the game of love).
And now there is a Motown record deal, an album recorded in the Capitol studios in LA and all may be our next superstar.
Look out for ‘Holy Smoke’, the debut album, in September - it promises a lot.
Shuffle with: Duffy, Amy Winehouse, Macy Gray & Paloma Faith
Play on: Anytime, but especially good on a Saturday morning

Next gig: A few in Oz at the end of the month but nothing planned in NZ at this stage.

Nice tip! She’s great, and the Cardinals are a perfect match for her. If only Ryan Adams didn’t record so many bloody records she might get to play with them more.
