Built For Two Thousand & Now

It’s weird how it happens - but things often do happen in threes - they just do.

So yesterday I was having a conversation about the new venture I’m involved with and there was a healthy dose of scepticism from the other party. That’s fine, it goes with the territory. The gist was that Flingah looked really good now but having an SMS business it two or certainly five years was crazy. Having been involved in a business for the future (or ahead of its time as we liked to call it) a decade ago I now fail to understand this logic.

Surely a business has to make sense now. It may be built to expand and grow into the future but it has to stack up now. It doesn’t seem to matter how much logic is thrown at a conversation like this it tends to fall on deaf ears.

Here are the stats for the record..

  • Near enough 100% of adult NZ’ers have a mobile phone
  • 80% of them keep it within arms length 24/7
  • Over 30% of men and 20% of women say they can’t LIVE without their mobile phone
  • 97% of texts are read by the recipient
  • 87% are read within an hour of being sent

So why do I think the maths stacks up for a online/SMS service..

Then this morning I read two other opinion pieces in this area. First up was Seth who makes the point that the “drive-by technorati” may lead the curve but it is only once they have moved on that the real innovation can happen.

Then hot on his heels Webby details a similar conversation to the one I had had a day earlier and comes to the same place - you have to operate in-the-now

So I am. I am proud of it, owning it. It’s two thousand and now - let’s live it!
